Overview

4-Day Lake Nakuru & Maasai Mara Safari — Flamingos to Big Five

Day two. Nakuru. The game drive turns a corner on the lakeshore track and the view that opens is so extraordinary you ask the guide to stop the vehicle just to look at it. Flamingos. Tens of thousands of them, turning the entire southern shore of the lake pink. Behind them, a Rothschild’s giraffe moves through yellow acacia at an angle that looks entirely deliberate. Day four. Mara. A leopard in a tree. Three lions on a kill. The Migration visible on the horizon. Kenya has delivered everything it promised.”

Flamingos & Lions is the most concentrated two-park safari in our Kenya catalogue — four days that give you Lake Nakuru’s Rift Valley spectacle and the Maasai Mara’s wildlife density in a single compact itinerary. It is the ideal safari for travellers who want more than a single park but don’t have a full week available.

Nakuru and the Mara are only three hours apart by road, making the transfer between them a genuine part of the journey rather than a chore — driving through the Rift Valley floor, past Lake Naivasha, and up the Mara escarpment at sunset.

WHY YOU’LL LOVE THIS

This four-day combination is the most efficient wildlife-per-day itinerary in Kenya. Nakuru’s flamingo spectacle is the world’s most colourful wildlife scene; the Mara’s lion density is the highest in Africa. Putting them together in four days gives the Western traveller with a limited leave window the full Kenya experience without compromise.

Lake Nakuru National Park is a 188 square kilometre park within the Greater Rift Valley, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its exceptional biodiversity. The lake is an alkaline, shallow soda lake that creates ideal conditions for flamingo feeding — spirulina algae growth. Nakuru’s white rhino population was established through a reintroduction programme from South Africa and now numbers over 70 individuals. The Maasai Mara National Reserve (1,510 sq km) is the northern extension of the Serengeti ecosystem and hosts the highest lion density in Africa. The group joining format uses a shared 4×4 vehicle with other travellers; private format provides exclusive vehicle use.
