“You board the light aircraft at Wilson Airport. Fifty minutes later, the pilot banks left and you see it below you: the rolling golden plains of the Lewa Conservancy, Mt Kenya white-capped on the horizon, a herd of Grevy’s zebra crossing a dry lugga as if the entire savannah is theirs — which, of course, it is. The wheels touch down on the airstrip. Someone is waiting with a cold drink. You are in the bush.”
Lewa Conservancy is the premium alternative to Kenya’s national park safari — a 25,000-hectare private conservancy that combines outstanding wildlife with the activities, flexibility, and intimacy impossible in a national park setting. Flying in from Nairobi removes the long road transfers, the border crossing queues, the dust, and the time — and replaces them with forty-five minutes of aerial Kenya that is spectacular in its own right.
At Lewa, night game drives are permitted (unavailable in national parks). Bush walks with armed rangers are standard. The Grevy’s zebra density here is the highest in Kenya. Black rhino move freely. And Mount Kenya provides the backdrop to every morning game drive.
Lewa is what Kenya’s national parks were before the roads arrived. The fly-in removes the last remaining friction — the four-hour drive from Nairobi — and the result is a safari experience that feels entirely private, unhurried, and removed from the tourist circuit. For clients who have done the Mara and want something that feels genuinely exclusive, Lewa is the answer.

Lewa Wildlife Conservancy is a not-for-profit organisation that manages 25,000 hectares in Isiolo County, adjacent to Mount Kenya National Park. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site (inscribed as part of the Mount Kenya ecosystem). Lewa partners with neighbouring community conservancies across 90,000 hectares of the Laikipia ecosystem — one of Africa’s most important privately managed wildlife areas. The conservancy’s airstrip receives scheduled flights from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport operated by Safarilink and AirKenya (approximately 45 minutes). Night game drives and walking safaris are included in all Lewa lodge packages.
