Overview

9-Day Kenya Safari & Beach Holiday — Amboseli, Tsavo & Mombasa Coast

The transition happens somewhere between Tsavo and the coast. The red laterite earth of the savannah gives way to coconut palms. The smell of the bush becomes the smell of salt. You have spent six days watching elephants and lions. Now the Indian Ocean is in front of you and the only decision you need to make is whether to swim before or after lunch.”

Kenya has always been a two-act destination. Act one: the wildlife. Elephants beneath Kilimanjaro at Amboseli, the red-dust plains of Tsavo East, the dramatic night game viewing at Salt Lick Lodge. Act two: the coast. The turquoise Indian Ocean, the white coral beaches of Diani, the spice-scented lanes of Mombasa’s Old Town.

Safari to Sea is the classic Kenya combo — the journey that shows you why this country has been drawing visitors for over a century. Nine days is the perfect length: enough time to do the wildlife properly, enough beach days to genuinely unwind.

WHY YOU’LL LOVE THIS

This is the tour that converts a first-time Kenya visitor into a repeat visitor. The combination of Amboseli’s grandeur, Tsavo’s wildness, and the coast’s complete sensory contrast makes it the most emotionally complete safari in our catalogue. Families love it because the beach days at the end give everyone — including children — a genuine holiday reward after the early morning game drives.

Diani Beach, located 30 kilometres south of Mombasa on Kenya’s south coast, is consistently ranked among the Indian Ocean’s finest beaches — fine white sand, warm clear water, and a coral reef just offshore. The coast section of this tour operates at mid-range beach hotels unless upgraded. Mombasa’s Old Town is a UNESCO-tentative heritage site and home to Fort Jesus, a 16th-century Portuguese fort that now houses one of East Africa’s most significant archaeological museums. Tsavo National Park — Africa’s largest — divides naturally into East and West, each with distinct terrain and wildlife character.

Itinerary

Day 1
Into the Wild- Nairobi-Amboseli National Park
Pickup from your Nairobi hotel or JKIA airport with a full guide briefing en route. Drive south through the Athi-Kapiti plains into Amboseli in time for lunch and check-in. An afternoon game drive launches the safari — Amboseli's legendary elephant herds drift through the swamp edges as Kilimanjaro floats on the horizon. Lion, Cape buffalo, spotted hyena, zebra and cheetah are all possible. Sundowner drinks at camp as the mountain turns pink at dusk.
Activities: Airport/hotel pickup · Guide briefing · Afternoon game drive · Camp sundowner
Overnight: Oltukai Lodge
Day 2
Full Day in Amboseli – Elephants & Kilimanjaro Views
Rise before dawn for the clearest Kilimanjaro views before the summit disappears into cloud. A full-day game drive covers all five of Amboseli's ecosystems: the swamp, open plains, acacia woodland, yellow fever forest and rocky thornbush. Large herds of elephant, zebra, wildebeest and giraffe throughout the day. Lion are regularly found at the swamp edges; cheetah hunt on the open ground. Optional afternoon visit to a Maasai manyatta — a genuine community exchange that your guide arranges personally. Over 600 bird species recorded in the park.
Activities: Pre-dawn game drive · Elephant herd tracking · Big cat search · Optional Maasai village visit · Birdwatching (600+ species)
Overnight: Oltukai Lodge
Day 3
Amboseli to Tsavo West-Mzima springs
Leave Amboseli after an early morning game drive and drive east into Tsavo West — Africa's most dramatic landscape of ancient lava fields and volcanic hills. The centrepiece is Mzima Springs: 50 million litres of crystal-clear water per day, filtered through volcanic rock, where an underwater viewing window lets you watch hippos and Nile crocodiles in gin-clear water — one of Kenya's most extraordinary wildlife spectacles. Optional short walk on the Shetani Lava Fields (600 years old). Check into Salt Lick Lodge, built on stilts above a floodlit waterhole famous for night game viewing — elephant, buffalo, lion and leopard visit after dark.
Activities: Morning Amboseli game drive · Mzima Springs underwater viewing · Shetani Lava Fields walk. Dinner and overnight in Kilaguni Serena lodge.
Day 4
Tsavo West to Tsavo East· Lugard Falls & Yatta Plateau
Cross from Tsavo West to Tsavo East — Kenya's largest and oldest national park, a vast semi-arid landscape of scattered thornbush crossed by the Galana River. The famous "red elephants" — their grey skin permanently stained by the iron-rich laterite dust they bathe in — are unique to this park. Stop at Lugard Falls, where the Galana River narrows dramatically through ancient volcanic rock worn smooth over millennia. The Yatta Plateau, the world's longest lava flow at 300km, forms the backdrop of your afternoon drive. Over 500 bird species recorded including vultures, secretary bird and hornbills.
Activities: Red elephant encounters · Lugard Falls gorge visit · Yatta Plateau viewpoint · Afternoon game drive (lion, cheetah, gerenuk, lesser kudu) · Birdwatching
Overnight: dinner and overnight in Voi Safari Lodge
Day 5
Tsavo East to Mombasa – Safari to Beach
A final early morning game drive in Tsavo East — your best opportunity for Tsavo lion, which are known for their exceptional size — before checking out and driving east toward the Indian Ocean. The road through the Coast Province is itself a pleasure: coconut plantations, Swahili fishing villages and the ancient spice routes of the Kenyan coast. Arrive Mombasa by early afternoon and check into your beach hotel. Recommended: an evening walk through Mombasa Old Town — the Arab merchant lanes, Fort Jesus, the carved wooden doors and the call to prayer at dusk make this one of East Africa's most atmospheric urban experiences.
Activities: Final Tsavo morning drive · Scenic coast drive. Overnight at Pride Inn Paradise Beach Resort & Spa Mombasa
Day 6
Mombasa – Beach Relaxation
Enjoy a full day at leisure on the white sandy beaches of Mombasa.
Optional activities:

Snorkeling or diving
Dhow cruises
Visit to Old Town & Fort Jesus-Optional
Overnight at Pride Inn Paradise Beach Resort & Spa Mombasa
Day 7
Full day in Mombasa
A full, unhurried day at the Indian Ocean. The morning is for the water — snorkelling on the house reef or a short boat trip to a nearby coral garden. The water temperature hovers around 27°C year-round and visibility on calm days is extraordinary. Parrotfish, lionfish, moray eels and hawksbill sea turtles are regularly sighted. The afternoon brings the dhow sunset cruise — one of Kenya's most defining coast experiences. A traditional wooden sailing vessel, golden evening light, fresh coconut and local snacks, and the same dhow traffic that has crossed these waters since the 7th century. End the day with fresh lobster, crab or kingfish at a beachfront restaurant.
Activities: Morning reef snorkelling · Sea turtle sightings · Optional dhow sunset cruise (~$35–50 per person) · Fresh seafood dinner& overnight at Pride Inn Paradise Beach Resort & Spa Mombasa
Day 8
