Overview

Kilimanjaro Trek — 6-Day Marangu Route to Uhuru Peak | Roof of Africa

You cross Gilman’s Point (5,681m) just after midnight and stop to breathe. The headlamps of the climbers below you look like a slow-moving constellation. Above you, Uhuru Peak is forty-five minutes away. The cold is profound. Then you take another step, and another. At 5,895 metres, you are on the highest point in Africa. You have been walking for six days to get here. It was worth every step.”

Kilimanjaro is Africa’s most iconic summit and the world’s highest free-standing mountain. At 5,895 metres, Uhuru Peak is accessible to fit, well-prepared trekkers without technical mountaineering experience — which is why it attracts climbers from every country on Earth, at every skill level.

The Marangu Route is the classic Kilimanjaro experience — the original route, the most established, and the only one with dormitory hut accommodation throughout (all other routes use tents). It is also the most gradual ascent profile on the mountain’s eastern side, with a steady progression through rainforest, heath, moorland, and alpine desert before the final summit push.

Lilac Roller coordinates this trek from Nairobi — including transport to Moshi (Tanzania), park permits, certified Tanzanian mountain guides, and full team of porters.

WHY YOU’LL LOVE THIS

Standing on Uhuru Peak is one of a small number of experiences that is genuinely as powerful as anticipated. The Marangu route’s hut system means you sleep in a bed each night — a significant advantage for trekkers who want the summit without tent camping. Our team handles all the Tanzania logistics from the Nairobi side, so your only job is to walk.

Mount Kilimanjaro is located in Kilimanjaro National Park, Tanzania, approximately 340 kilometres south of Nairobi via road through the Namanga border crossing or accessible by flight from Nairobi to Kilimanjaro International Airport. Our Marangu Route trek uses registered Tanzanian mountain guides licensed by KINAPA (Kilimanjaro National Park Authority). The Marangu Route’s three main huts — Mandara (2,720m), Horombo (3,720m), and Kibo (4,700m) — are permanent dormitory structures. Summit attempt departs Kibo Hut at approximately midnight to reach Gilman’s Point at sunrise. The descent returns via the same Marangu route. Overall summit success rates on the 6-day Marangu route are approximately 65–70% for fit, well-prepared trekkers.
