“Your permit is issued for Group Amahoro. You enter the forest at 8am with a guide and two rangers. At 10:47am, you hear breathing. The vegetation parts. A juvenile gorilla drops from a branch two metres in front of you and immediately starts playing. Behind him, a silverback adjusts his position and goes back to eating. You have one hour. You will remember every second of it for the rest of your life.”
Rwanda is unlike anywhere else in Africa. It is orderly, modern, and profoundly moving — a country that emerged from catastrophe and rebuilt itself with extraordinary determination. The wildlife here matches the emotional intensity of the place: mountain gorillas in ancient volcanic forest, chimpanzees in the oldest rainforest in Africa, and a capital city whose museums document both the worst and the best of what human beings are capable of.
Gorillas & Green Hills moves through three completely different Rwandan landscapes in six days — from Kigali’s urban energy to Nyungwe’s ancient forest to the volcanic peaks where the gorillas live. The gorilla permit is included in your tour price.
Of everything in our catalogue — the lions, the Ngorongoro Crater, the flamingo lakes — the gorilla encounter is the one guests consistently describe as the most powerful hour of their lives. Not the most beautiful. The most powerful. There is something in a mountain gorilla’s gaze that rearranges something fundamental in how you see the world.
Mountain gorilla permits in Rwanda are issued by the Rwanda Development Board and cost $1,500 per person per trek. Our tour price includes this permit in full — there are no surprise additions on the day. Permits must be pre-booked many months in advance; our team handles this booking as soon as your safari is confirmed. Rwanda requires a valid passport and entry visa (available on arrival for most nationalities or via the Rwanda e-visa portal). Nyungwe Forest National Park is one of Africa’s oldest intact rainforests — over 13 primate species have been documented within it.
