Overview

Uganda Gorilla & Chimp Safari — 7 Days, Bwindi Impenetrable Forest | Lilac Roller

“Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is not a metaphor. It is a name that describes the experience of moving through it: dense, ancient, humid, and alive in ways that open savannah never is. When the ranger stops and raises his hand, you hear a sound like breathing and like trees moving and like something very large and very aware of you standing completely still thirty metres away”

Uganda is East Africa’s most underrated safari destination. It has mountain gorillas in Bwindi, chimpanzees in Kibale, hippos and tree-climbing lions in Queen Elizabeth, zebra and buffalo in Lake Mburo. The Apes of Africa circuit is our seven-day Uganda primate safari, built around the gorilla encounter at Bwindi but delivering a complete cross-section of Uganda’s remarkable wildlife in the days before and after.

Gorilla trekking permit included. Chimpanzee trekking permit included. The rest of Uganda takes care of itself.

WHY YOU’LL LOVE THIS TOUR

Uganda’s gorillas live in a completely different landscape to Rwanda’s — Bwindi’s dense impenetrable forest means the trek itself is an experience unlike anything in Rwanda’s volcanic bamboo forest. For clients who want the gorilla encounter in a rawer, more wilderness context, Uganda is the right choice.

Uganda gorilla trekking permits are issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority and cost $700 per person per trek (compared to $1,500 in Rwanda). Both permits are fully included in our published tour price. Queen Elizabeth National Park is one of Africa’s most biologically diverse parks . It sits on the Albertine Rift and hosts habitat ranging from savannah to tropical forest within a single park boundary. The Kazinga Channel is a 32-kilometre natural channel connecting Lakes Edward and George. Boat cruises here offer some of Uganda’s finest wildlife viewing including hippo, Nile crocodile, and exceptional birdlife.
