“There are no fences in Hell’s Gate National Park. No barriers between you and the buffalo that grazes by the path as you cycle past. No glass window between you and the geothermal steam rising from the gorge floor. Just a bicycle, a 11-kilometre trail, and the most theatrical landscape in the Rift Valley.”
Hell’s Gate is Kenya’s most unusual national park — the only one where you can walk or cycle freely among the wildlife without a vehicle. There are no predators here, which means the zebra, giraffe, buffalo, and warthog that share the park with you are entirely unbothered by your presence.
The gorge itself descends through 40 metres of volcanic rock into a slot canyon carved by geothermal action — steam vents, hot springs, and a landscape that inspired the setting for the Lion King. A guided gorge walk with a park ranger takes you into the narrowest sections, past ancient rock walls, through passages barely wide enough to walk single-file.
Pair with Lake Naivasha for a full-day Rift Valley experience.
Hell’s Gate National Park is 90 minutes from Nairobi via the Naivasha highway and is most commonly visited as a day trip or in combination with a Lake Naivasha overnight. The park covers 68 square kilometres of savannah and gorge terrain. Bicycle rental is available at the park entrance. The main gorge walk is 3–4 hours and involves some scrambling in the narrowest sections — appropriate for moderate fitness. The park’s geothermal features power Naivasha’s geothermal plants, which supply a significant portion of Kenya’s electricity.
Most safari parks keep you in a vehicle for safety. Hell’s Gate puts you on a bicycle in the middle of it. That fundamental difference changes the entire experience — you feel Africa at the scale of an animal moving through it, not a tourist observing it. It is also the best-value day in our catalogue.
