“Your guide stops the vehicle at the Ewaso Ng’iro River. On the far bank, a gerenuk stands upright on its hind legs, reaching into an acacia with its impossibly long neck. ‘The Special Five,’ your guide says. ‘This one you cannot see in the Mara. Not anywhere south of here.’ It is, you realise, the first animal you have ever seen that you had no reference point for. Kenya keeps doing this.”
Samburu is the Mara’s secret counterpart : just as rich in wildlife, far less crowded, and home to the species that have adapted to Northern Kenya’s arid semi-desert landscape. The Samburu Special Five are so named because they are endemic to the Somali-Maasai biome and simply do not exist anywhere south of the equator: Grevy’s zebra (the world’s most endangered zebra), reticulated giraffe (the most beautiful), gerenuk (the ‘giraffe-necked antelope’), Somali ostrich (blue-legged, larger than the Maasai ostrich), and Beisa oryx.
Three days at Samburu gives you two full game drive cycles and a second morning. The Ewaso Ng’iro River is the gathering point : crocodiles, elephant, and lion all concentrate at the water, making river-edge game drives the most productive in the reserve.
Samburu is where experienced safari travellers go when they want to see something new. Guests who have done the Mara three times discover here that Kenya’s north is a completely different wildlife world. The Special Five concept is irresistible to any serious wildlife traveller — these are animals that exist nowhere else in Kenya, and the ‘completion’ logic means guests rarely leave without planning a return.

Samburu National Reserve covers 165 square kilometres in Isiolo County, northern Kenya, and sits at approximately 900 metres elevation — significantly lower and hotter than Nairobi or the Mara highlands. The reserve is bordered to the south by the Ewaso Ng’iro River, which also borders Buffalo Springs National Reserve, creating a combined wildlife area of over 300 square kilometres. The Grevy’s zebra is the world’s largest wild equid and one of its most endangered, with fewer than 3,000 individuals remaining. Samburu is their primary stronghold.
