Overview

The Kenya Classic Safari — 8 Days, Five Parks, Private Vehicle | Lilac Roller Safaris

On the equator, your guide stops and points to a board by the road. You stand with one foot in the northern hemisphere and one in the southern. A hundred metres later, the gates of Ol Pejeta Conservancy open. By evening, you will have seen the last two northern white rhinos on Earth from four metres away. This is Kenya. Every day of it is unlike the last.”

The Kenya Classic is the gold standard of Kenya safari itineraries — eight days that show you why this country is the most complete wildlife destination on the continent. You begin in the Aberdares highlands, cross the equator into Ol Pejeta, descend to the Rift Valley and Lake Nakuru’s flamingo shores, drive west to the Mara’s endless plains, and finish on the freshwater stillness of Lake Naivasha.

Five completely different ecosystems. Five completely different experiences. One private vehicle, one expert guide, and eight days of Kenya exactly as it should be seen.

WHY YOU’LL LOVE THIS TOUR

This is the itinerary we recommend when someone says: ‘I want to do Kenya properly, once, and see everything.’ It is also the itinerary we secretly wish we could do every year. Eight days is the right length — long enough to breathe, short enough to want more.

The Kenya Classic Safari operates in private vehicle format — meaning this vehicle is exclusively yours for all eight days. Accommodation spans three tiers across the route: tented camp at Ol Pejeta (Sweetwaters), tree hotel at the Aberdares (The Ark), lodge at Lake Nakuru, lodge at Maasai Mara, and lakeside lodge at Naivasha. The Ark at Aberdares is an iconic overnight game-viewing experience built beside a floodlit waterhole — one of Kenya’s most distinctive safari nights.

Day 1

Nairobi–Ol Pejeta Conservancy
Approx. 3.5 hours drive | Stop at the Equator
Your guide collects you from your Nairobi hotel or Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and you head north into the Mount Kenya highlands, the landscape rising and greening as the city falls away behind you. Stop at the equator at Nanyuki — your guide demonstrates the famous water experiment showing which way water drains in each hemisphere. One foot in the north, one in the south.
Through the gates of Ol Pejeta Conservancy. Check in to Sweetwaters Tented Camp in time for lunch, then straight out for an afternoon game drive with a visit to the chimpanzee sanctuary — Kenya's only chimp population, protected under the Jane Goodall Institute. By evening you will have already seen black rhino, elephant and buffalo. Dinner and overnight at Sweetwaters Tented Camp.
Accommodation: Sweetwaters Tented Camp | Meals: Lunch & Dinner

Day 2

Ol Pejeta Conservancy full Day
Morning & afternoon game drives | Northern white rhino encounter
A full day inside one of the most important conservation areas in Africa. The morning game drive heads to the northern white rhino enclosure — Najin and Fatu, the last two surviving members of their subspecies, live here under 24-hour armed guard. Your guide explains, without drama, exactly how the northern white rhino was lost and exactly what Ol Pejeta's scientists are doing to try to bring it back from the edge. It is a moment that reframes everything you thought you knew about wildlife conservation.
The afternoon game drive covers the conservancy's broader landscape — lion, cheetah, elephant, plains game and the Ewaso Ng'iro River, where hippos and crocodiles share the banks. Ol Pejeta is compact enough to cover thoroughly and wild enough to surprise you at every turn. Dinner and overnight at Sweetwaters Tented Camp.
Accommodation: Sweetwaters Tented Camp | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 3

Ol Pejeta Ranch–Aberdare National Park
Drive through highland Kenya | Afternoon at The Ark
After breakfast and checkout, drive west into the Aberdares — Kenya's mist-draped mountain heartland, a landscape of bamboo forest, waterfalls and open moorland that most safari travellers never see. Arrive at Aberdares Country Club for lunch, then board the lodge's transfer vehicle deep into the park.
The Ark is unlike any other place you will stay in Africa. Built like Noah's Ark on stilts above a natural waterhole and salt lick, it is a game-viewing platform disguised as a lodge. Your afternoon and evening are spent on the tiered wooden decks watching the waterhole below — elephant families arriving silently from the forest, warthog families trotting in to drink, giant forest hog rooting in the mud. After dark, the floodlights come on and the night shift begins. Leopard have been seen here. Buffalo come in hundreds. Your guide will wake you quietly if something extraordinary arrives. Dinner and overnight at The Ark.
Accommodation: The Ark Lodge | Meals: Lunch & Dinner

Day 4

Aberdares–Lake Nakuru National Park
Breakfast at the lodge, check out and drive to Lake Nakuru. The Park is a home to stunning flocks of lesser and Greater Flamingos, which literally turn the lakeshores into a magnificent pink stretch. The bird life here is worldly renown and over 400 bird’s species exist here, White Pelicans, Plovers, Egrets and Marabou Stork. It is also one of the very few places in Africa to see the White Rhino and rare Rothschild Giraffe. All meals and overnight at Lake Nakuru Lodge.

Day 5

Lake Nakuru–Maasai Mara National Reserve
Morning highland drive | Afternoon flamingo-shore game drive
After breakfast, descend from the Aberdares highlands and drive south through the Rift Valley to Lake Nakuru National Park — a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Kenya's most visually dramatic parks. The lake's alkaline waters support an extraordinary concentration of birdlife, and when the flamingos gather, the shoreline turns an astonishing shade of pink.
Check in to Lake Nakuru Lodge for lunch, then afternoon game drive along the lakeshore and through the yellow fever tree woodlands. Watch for white rhino resting in the shade, Rothschild's giraffe — the world's rarest giraffe subspecies — moving elegantly through the trees, and lions on the rocky outcrops of the Makalia escarpment. The Out of Africa Lookout, where Meryl Streep once stood surveying these exact plains, offers a panoramic view that makes the drive up worthwhile. Dinner and overnight at Lake Nakuru Lodge.
Accommodation: Lake Nakuru Lodge | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 6

Maasai Mara National Reserve
Morning & afternoon game drives | Picnic lunch in the bush
The full Maasai Mara day. Wake before sunrise — your guide has tea and coffee ready — and head out as the grassland comes alive in the early light. Morning game drive covers the Mara Triangle, the Mara River crossing points and the acacia-dotted plains where leopards rest through the midday heat.
Picnic lunch in the bush, set up properly by your crew under an acacia tree while the wildlife carries on around you. Afternoon game drive pushes deeper into the reserve. If it is migration season (July–October), your guide knows where the wildebeest herds are moving and will position you at the river before the crossing begins — the scene that appears in every wildlife documentary you have ever watched. You are now inside it.
Optional: Hot air balloon safari at dawn (+$450 per person) — float silently above the Mara plains as the sun rises, then land for a champagne bush breakfast. Optional: Maasai village visit and meet the community whose land and culture surrounds this entire ecosystem. Dinner and overnight at Mara Sopa Lodge.
Accommodation: Mara Sopa Lodge | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 7

Maasai Mara-Lake Naivasha
Morning checkout | Afternoon boat cruise on the lake
After an early morning game drive — the Mara always has one more surprise before you leave — enjoy breakfast and checkout. Drive northeast through the Rift Valley to Lake Naivasha, the highest of Kenya's freshwater lakes, sitting at 1,890 metres and fringed with papyrus reeds and yellow fever tree forest.
Check in to Lake Naivasha Simba Lodge, then board a traditional wooden boat for an afternoon cruise on the lake. Your guide points out hippo pods submerged in the shallows, African fish eagles calling from the fever trees, kingfishers working the papyrus edges and the occasional waterbuck grazing on the lakeshore. Optional: Crescent Island walk (+$35 per person) — a wildlife sanctuary in the lake where you walk among giraffe, zebra and wildebeest on foot with no predators present. A uniquely calm and intimate end to eight days of extraordinary wildlife. Dinner and overnight at Lake Naivasha Simba Lodge.
Accommodation: Lake Naivasha Simba Lodge | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 8

Maasai Mara-Lake Naivasha
Scenic drive | En-route lunch | Airport or hotel drop-off
After breakfast and checkout, drive back to Nairobi through the Rift Valley, stopping for scenic viewpoints and a final en-route lunch along the way. Arrive in Nairobi mid-to-late afternoon.
