“At 4,321 metres, the summit of Mt Elgon gives you Uganda to the west and Kenya to the east, with the enormous Caldera Rim — one of the world’s largest volcanic calderas at 40 kilometres wide — curving away below you. You have walked through bamboo forest, heather moorland, and glacial landscape to get here. The buffalo you passed at dawn have been living in this crater since before anyone named the mountain.”
Mt Elgon is Africa’s fourth-highest free-standing mountain and the least-crowded major trekking destination on the continent. Its volcanic base is the largest of any mountain on Earth . It reveals itself slowly as you climb through ecosystems that change every few hundred metres: montane forest to bamboo to heather moorland to the otherworldly high-altitude vegetation of the caldera rim.
Peak Uganda is a 4-day summit circuit combined with Sipi Falls. It is a series of three dramatic waterfalls on Elgon’s lower slopes . This makes it the most complete mountain adventure in East Africa for the active traveller.
Kenya’s Mt Kenya gets all the attention. Mt Elgon gets the serious trekkers who have done their research. It is longer, wilder, and — at the caldera rim — more geologically extraordinary. For an active traveller who wants to combine genuine altitude with African wildlife in the mountain zones, there is no better four-day objective in East Africa.
Mt Elgon National Park straddles the Uganda-Kenya border . The mountain’s summit is on the Ugandan side, but its eastern slopes extend into Kenya’s Mt Elgon National Park. Our trek operates from the Ugandan side via the Sasa or Piswa trail. The caldera (Wagagai summit, 4,321m) is a relatively straightforward summit for fit trekkers. No technical climbing required. Altitude medication (diamox) is recommended and is discussed in our pre-trip health briefing. Sipi Falls on Elgon’s lower slopes can be incorporated on Day 1 (arrival) or Day 4 (descent).
